Job Requirements
The City of Lancaster first posts available City positions in-house to afford
an opportunity for advancement and personal growth. Those positions not
filled internally are recruited through the One Stop Career Center, 705
North White Street, Lancaster, S.C., 29720.
It should be noted that career firefighter positions are usually filled from
the volunteer company who are considered city employees and receive a
monthly wage for services rendered.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be 18 years of age for a career firefighter position.
- Must have a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
- All applicants will be subject to a personnel test, drug and alcohol
test, driving history inquiry, and criminal history inquiry.

Prospective members of the City of Lancaster Fire Department may serve in one of
three companies: Career, Volunteer, or Explorer.
Career Firefighters are employed by the City of Lancaster and are required to complete
the seven week rookie school at the South Carolina Fire Academy in Columbia, S.C.
After the successful completion of this school and the acquisition of an S.C. C.D.L, the
graduate firefighter is a fully qualified member of the Lancaster Fire Department.
Volunteer Firefighters must also take required courses in firefighting, but are not
required to enroll in the seven week rookie school. They must, within the prescribed
time period, take and successfully complete minimum requirements for membership.
These courses are usually offered in the evenings. Volunteer firefighters may apply for
career positions, (after meeting the prescribed requirements) in the event of a career
opening. Training is on the second Thursday and fourth Sunday of each month at 6:00
PM and 1:00 PM, respectively..
Explorers must be members in good standing of the Boy Scouts of America and be
between the ages of 14 and 20 years. After attaining the age of 18 an Explorer may
apply for a volunteer or career firefighter position.
